"Mi-iz Ta-a-a-ffe-e-e-e-t!" the small girl's piercing cry rang throughout the narrow halls. "Mi-i-i-z -"
"What?!" Elizabeth Taffet snapped, "What are you doing still up, Olivia?!" She was busy - all the little ones had to be tucked away to sleep, and goodness, she'd already tucked Olivia away and kissed her goodnight!
"Where's Ava? She always kisses me goodnight before we all go to sleep!" Olivia pouted. Ava had become her older sister ever since the police dropped her off. She didn't talk much, but that was fine. As long as Olivia had a hand to hold and somebody to talk to, she was okay. Her mommy and poppy had never listened to her before - Ava was perfect, in her eyes.
"I don't know, did you check up in her room?" Miss Taffet was irritable as she held a small child in her arms.
"Oh, yes," Olivia nodded vigorously, "Katrina said Ava had gone out to the movies earlier... Or something. I forget. I wasn't really paying attention," the small girl explained, holding on to her doll.

Aaron felt ridiculous. Extremely ridiculous. He was carrying his date back to her orphanage. And she was unconscious. Well...at least she wasn't covered in blood.
Great. Now there were, not one, but two witnesses. So much for sneaking into her room without getting noticed.
"Um...hi. Yeah, this looks bad."

At the same time Miss Taffet screamed, "WHAT DID YOU DO TO HER?!", little Olivia ran forward and tugged on Ava's arm.
"Wake up, Ava!" she said anxiously, "C'mon, you're back home now!"
Ava grumbled. "Go 'way," she burrowed herself deeper into Aaron's chest. He was warm - must've been his human side.
Olivia seemed nothing short of ecstactic when Ava spoke. "C'mon! Your bed's all nice and comfy, and you don't even have to tuck me in tonight! I'll do it myself!"
Ava muttered something about being, "... pretty damn comfy where I am..."
"Olivia, go back to bed. I'll speak with Ava and... Her friend about curfew," Miss Taffet said curtly, touching Olivia's head. Olivia pouted, but ran off, dark curls flying behind her as she ran eagerly towards her friends to, undoubtedly, tell them about Ava's homecoming.
As soon as the girl was gone, Miss Taffet turned to face the two with a terrible stink eye. "What happened?" she demanded, "You know our curfew is at nine o' clock!" she gestured wildly at the clock. "What's your explanation for this?!"

Aaron could feel his insides sink lower and lower, until they were far beneath the ground. What the hell?! They have curfew?! Is this Alcatraz or something?!
"Well...the movie...it was insane. Full of gore and, Ava had trouble stomaching it. Um, I'm Aaron by the way." He smiled nervously. Don't show your fangs, and don't do anything stupid. This lady looks like she could chop off my hands, starting with my thumbs. Whoa. What kind of vampire am I?

"Ava never has trouble stomaching anything," Olivia's voice piped up from across the hall faithfully, "She's so brave,"
Miss Taffet sighed. She had no right to question the young idiot - err - Aaron, young Aaron. She had no right to question young Aaron any further. She would have to let him go, no matter how true Olivia's comment rang. She grumbled audibly and continued to glare at him. She had no conviction over him, but Ava was in for hell later. "Alright then," she muttered, "Put her on that bed," she pointed, "And then get out!" She glared at him one last time before storming away.

Of course, the little girl was right, and Aaron knew it. Ava? Unable to stomach a MOVIE? And of all movies, Paranormal Activity 2? Right. And Aaron was a completely, whole-heartedly wonderful, honest and trustworthy man/vampire who had never ever killed someone or had tried to kill someone, especially not a young, innocent girl. Right.
He couldn't help but feel a little comically cheerful. Clearly the orphanage lady didn't like him. And it was fun to play the disliked boyfriend! Plus, maybe if she forbids Ava to see me, killing her won't be so hard. Yup. This would totally work out.
Aaron patted Ava's head after gently placing her in bed. He didn't quite trust himself enough to not expose any fang quite yet. He saluted--yes, saluted. Nothing better than good witnesses, so he wouldn't be tempted to go vampire on Ava--the little girl before strolling out the orphanage.
"See ya." He called back. Oh, yes, everything was going according to plan.
Yeah. That was sarcasm. Aaron was relying completely on dumb luck and sheer coincidences to keep Ava alive, without exposing himself.
